Sound in movie production

The concept of sound in film is a very broad topic to consider. Sound is usually just a background of events for the viewer, audible but usually not listened to with attention. Film sound helps the viewer to find himself in a particular place of the action. It gives the viewer a sense of realism, and can place the viewer in the situation found on the screen. sound effects in film

The sound effects you hear in most films, however, were not recorded 100% on set, during the shooting process. On the one hand, it is common to use sound banks. There you can find huge amounts of effects that are available for use in the soundtrack. However, these ready-made, pre-recorded sounds do not always blend with the overall work. Therefore, filmmakers often record various types of effects themselves, or use the services of sound imitators.

In the production of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, sound engineer Waler Murch made a great many effects by supporting himself with objects completely different from the imitated objects. That’s how the buzzing of mosquitoes was crafted from the roar of motorcycle engines, or a fly trapped behind a windshield. Similarly, the croaking of frogs – was produced by appropriate editing of horn sounds.

Many effects are also created on the computer. Sound editing programs provide a great deal of opportunity to create new effects needed for a scene. Proper mixing and riffing can produce extraordinary effects without leaving the studio. But this approach is very controversial in the film world. Many established filmmakers say that it is best for the entire work to record as much material as possible on set. This gives the effect of greater realism and makes it possible to get the same atmosphere that prevailed on the film location.

Whichever way you approach the subject – sound is crucial in the reception of a film work. Although it doesn’t get as much attention, it’s worth remembering how much influence it has on the viewer’s emotions and perception of each situation on the screen. In many of our film productions, whether they are animations or live action films, background music is the basis for the success of the reception of the finished film production.
