Stop motion animation works!

Who today has time to do stop-motion animation? Probably people who either have rich parents or don’t feel very confident in the hard real world. Once upon a time, especially at the big classical studios, stop-motion animation was the most common of the techniques for traditional cartoon films. Now time runs inexorably, and the deadline for completing an episode or spot is often “yesterday.”

However, there are even now “madmen” who decide to use such an animation technique. It is known that animation based on keyframes is faster, but as we know, the devil is in the details. These details are precisely fluidity and a certain naturalness of movement, which, however, is better conveyed by the traditional frame by frame method of animation.

For example, for a one-second sequence in the case of a smooth image, 25 frames of separate animated characters plus separate backgrounds must be prepared. This is a challenge, but certainly the final success is worth the effort. In one of the spots made ages ago, we played with such an animation method and the result seems worthwhile 😊 It was an advertising spot – one of a series of spots made for Kompania Piwowarska.

Currently, both at the level of television broadcasting as well as on the Internet, we can often see the time-lapse effect, and not only in animation classically understood, that is, cartoon animation. Increasingly, the time-lapse effect is also used in productions with actors, real scenery – in a word, in film productions such as commercials or advertising spots. In such a way were created some time ago two productions that we had the pleasure of realizing ie:

Stop motion animation of Baltic Pipe

Below is an interesting example of stop-motion animation. This unique animation on the  Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, which was displayed during a ceremony at the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall. The event, which took place on September 7, 2022, brought together such distinguished guests as the President and Prime Minister of Poland, the Prime Minister of Denmark and a delegation from the government of Norway. The animation was created especially for the occasion to present key information about one of Poland’s most important infrastructure investments in an accessible way.

Baltic Pipe is a strategic gas pipeline connecting the natural gas transmission systems of Poland and Denmark, enabling the delivery of gas from Norway to Poland and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. The project significantly enhances energy security, diversifies gas sources and strengthens energy market integration in the region. The pipeline mostly runs along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, which further emphasizes its complexity and technological importance.

The nearly three-minute 2D animation we created clearly and attractively explains the goals and benefits of Baltic Pipe. The simplicity of the graphics and the dynamism of the visual effects make even complex technical aspects easy to understand. Our production has played a key role in educating and informing the general public about this strategic project.

One of the varieties of stop-motion animation is also timelapse. This is a separate very extensive topic, which we will try to address in future posts….
